Weekly Recipe: Mom's Raised Doughnuts

Who doesn't love a good doughnut once in a while!

"This is a very old recipe. We always enjoyed these year-round." -Dorothy (BlueHighways TV viewer)

Ingredients:
2 pkgs. dry yeast
1/4 c. lukewarm water
1 tsp. sugar
1 c. scalded milk
1/2 c. Spry® (shortening)
2 tsp. salt
1/2 c. sugar
2 eggs; beaten
1 tsp. vanilla
5 c. flour

Instructions:
Mix yeast and 1 teaspoon of sugar in lukewarm milk, set aside to raise.

Mix scalded milk, Spry®, sugar and salt.  Let cool slightly.

Add beaten eggs, yeast mixture, and vanilla.   Stir in enough flour to make a soft dough.  Let raise until double, mix down and let raise again.  Roll out and cut.

Let raise and fry in 360ºF shortening until browned on both sides.  Glaze while hot if desired.

Side Note:
Spry® was a brand name for shortening.  Today we call it Crisco®.

Add 1/2 Tbsp. cornstarch to glaze and it will make it shiny & stays on the doughnuts.
